The local clay chawans are a depiction of Nyonyas (females) and Babas (males) of the Peranakans
(early Chinese who married local ethnics in the Straits Settlement during the 15th to
19th century). This ethnic integration gave rise to a mixed Chinese /Malay culture with a certain
lifestyle, attire, cuisine and language.
Nyonyas often wore a kebaya, an attractive outfit pinned with 3 brooches (called kerongsangs)
and their slippers were embroidered with colourful glass beads.
