A bowl, or Chawan, is the easiest shape to make on the wheel but also the most difficult to perfect. Porcelain especially can have a mind of its own and the potter has to coax it into the required shape. I like to throw the clay as fine as possible in order to exploit the fluidity and translucency of the porcelain, which on some bowls is highlighted by carving and piercing the thrown piece before firing. Other bowls have added colour with silver highlights which create raised patterns and textures that can be appreciated visually and with the hands. Copper in the colouring often bleeds through to add pattern to the inside of the bowl.
